I am fascinated with the GB religion. I think what fascinates me the most is the closeness that you all have with one another. Sometimes I wish I was born GB. I have tried builing relationships with some GB, but I get the impression that they don’t let me get too close–since I’m not a member. Can you give any insight?

gb’s are a really close-knit community. everyone is like family. actually most of them are family! i love the support of the gb family, i just don’t agree with all the views.
most gb’s are really guarded and afraid to get to close to the people around them that aren’t gb because they are concerned with being drawn away from the church. they think that if they let someone with different views get close to them, their ideas will be distorted. i’m sorry you’ve had this kind of experience with gb’s and i promise that not all are like that. there are some gb’s that are way more conservative than others and for the most part it is the more conservative ones that are really secluded from people outside the church.

Thank you for helping me understand. Even though you don’t agree with all their views do you think you will become a member one day? Do you feel pressure to date only those within the church?

no i definitely dont think i will be a member. im too independent and opinionated to be a gb. and yes there is a lot of pressure to date guys from the church. sometimes it feels like people look down on me because i dont date in the church. not my peers, but the older people. but there really is no one in the chuch that i know that i would like to date right now.

You indicated that your parents were going to Jamaica— Do your parents think it is ok to wear bathing suits? I know some GB that will go to the beach and not go swimming or wear bathing suits.

well, the church doesn’t allow the baptized women to wear bathing suits. i don’t know about the men though. i know my dad wears swimming trunks (with a tshirt) and my mom has dresses that she wears especially for swimming. they are just like her normal dresses, except a little shorter and minus the apron. of course she always wears shorts or something underneath!
for the most part, if you are swimming with a gb woman they will wear their dress. the men…idk i don’t go swimming with baptized men except for my dad. i know some people though when they go to the beach with just their family or with people they can trust not to tell on them, they’ll wear a bathing suit. and trust me if the church leaders found out, it wouldn’t be good!
my parents have no problem with me or any other non-member wearing a bathing suit though, as long as it is modest.

Thank you for explaining that. I hope you don’t mind all of my questions. Believe it or not, I have another question—- Why does the religion not allow members to have musical instruments in the home? I would think playing hymns on the guitar or piano would be glory to God?

i don’t know the answer to that question right off the top of my head but i will find out and let you know as soon as possible.

i guess i can tell you what i think…i think youre right, it would be a glory to God. of course not all the music would be glorifying, but certainly you could use your discretion and your conscience should help you there.

ok…gb’s dont necessarily think musical instruments are bad, just the improper use of them. also they think that you might start playing the instrument more for yourself than for God, like you might take pride in your playing and the true purpose will be lost.

Would you agree that the OGBBC is a spiritually abusive and toxic church?

no not really. why would you say that it is?

Mostly from the testimonies of those who have suffered spiritual abuse at the hands of the OGBBC. Also I have studied it quite a bit in the past three years or so (including attending the Annual Meeting last year). The OGBBC system is clearly broken. They are caught up in a cycle of extreme legalism like no other church I have ever personally experienced.
