german baptist are a conservative group that originated in germany. they have a uniform-women wear dresses with long sleeves, capes, and aprons. there is a head covering they wear all the time. the guys wear broadfalls and vests and a black hat.

they believe you can lose your salvation. like if you sin which everyone does, you have to ask forgiveness for it before you can go to heaven. that’s the main reason i’ve never become a german baptist. that and no one is real about their faith. i’ve always felt like people just got baptized because that was what their parents wanted or all their friends were doing it too. with the exception of a few people, i never saw a difference in these peoples lives from before to after they got baptized, except they’d take the radio out of their car if they had one in. i’ve always felt like german baptists were too judgemental and harsh about what other people do when it’s really none of their business. they make a big deal out of little things that shouldn’t even matter or have nothing to do with them.

[...]  You can see the capes on the woman in the front.  So the members can’t really play organized sports in a dress, and the non-members like my sister can play if the parents let them. This is also not encouraged, but not neccassarily agaisnt the rules. Although GB’s don’t play on organized sports teams they do enjoy just getting together and playing volleyball, basketball, football, and softball at Young Folk’s.   Here’s a link to my sister’s blog post about GB dress. http://germanhokie.wordpress.com/2007/10/12/on-german-baptists/  [...]

some of them take the radio out of their car, but not all of them

As a German Baptist I share your concerns. There probably are some GB’s who believe you can lose your salvation. I don’t. I don’t know anyone who thinks that, but there probably are some. There are some who not “real” in their faith. We have encountered what I think may be that among GB’s and other groups.

My own experience was that baptizing didn’t change me–Jesus Christ did.

I am not sure how capes and dresses hinder most sports–but then, I am a man :) The young people seem to have a great time–I’ve never heard anyone mention that as an issue before. Way back when my GB Grandma was in high school, she was a star baseball player. Course they all dressed a lot alike in those days.

Bless you and them.

It is my experience that the term “German Baptist Follower of Jesus Christ” is a contradiction in terms. If you want to be a follower of Jesus Christ, you cannot at the same time be a good German Baptist. Conversely, if you are a good German Baptist, you cannot also be a follower of Jesus Christ. The two are diametrically opposed. It is like mixing oil and water. If you are a follower of Jesus Christ, then you follow Him in the direction that He leads and the course that He sets. The direction and the course of the Old German Baptist Brethren Church is in completely the opposite direction than that of Jesus Christ.

I don’t really think that you can judge an entire religious denonmination based on the opinions or actions of a few people that you have come into contact with. No one should judge; you, me or them. Therefore, I don’t think that a few people’s actions that you have perceived should be used to denouce an entire faith.
